Chapter 7
A Bedtime Story
Rainer woke at dusk feeling refreshed. Alive. Nearly human again. Not his usual status after a night where heâd overloaded his system. He tried to recall exactly what had happened, but his memories existed in fragments, a broken mirror reflecting bits and pieces of the night heâd spent in the pub with Sebastian and Kassian.
And Steven.
Where was Steven now?
Rainer looked around his bedroom but could see no sign of the human. Of course he wouldnât be here. There was no reason for him to stay while Rainer had been emulating the Incredible Immoveable Object.
And dreaming. Heâd had unusually vivid, erotic dreams of a loving so intense heâd come in a fraction of the time it used to take him, even back when he was able-bodied and perpetually randy. Stevenâs hands exploring his body with unabashed curiosity. A warm tongue stroking and teasing him into a rock hard state. An orgasm that shook him to the core.
Not a bad place for the dream to end, but Rainer suspected another blackout had occurred. Was it possible for such a thing to happen while he was already out for the night? Were these scenes in his head a product of some electro-chemical short circuit or had it been real? And if it had been real, could he talk the human into doing it again, this time while he was awake?
The answer to the last question, at least, was hell no. Orgasm made the lights go out in his mind. Just like drinking too much blood at one time. He got to a certain point in the proceedings and checked out, regardless of how hard he tried to fight it or how Kira Stone

many precautions he took. Whatever heâd imagined, it had to come from his own cravings for the human, not an act carried out by Stevenâs hands.
Steven mistrusted vampires, and with cause. Surely heâd taken off once it was clear Rainer was in no condition to pursue him.
Did the mysterious man interest him enough to give chase? Traveling was dangerous for him. Here, people would see that he got home safely if he happened to screw up, the way he had last night. Abroad, heâd have no one. His motives for going after Steven would have to be worth the risk, or the cost and embarrassment of hiring a guard to tag along.
What was Steven to him? Was he worth either price? Yes. That was part of Rainerâs problem. The man interested him too much. Even now his body yearned to seek him out, join in an intimate embrace, fill all the empty crevices of his heart with Stevenâs sweet presence.
Until he blacked out.
What kind of relationship would that be? Tempted beyond reason to fuck the human silly every waking moment and cut himself off from his friends, his community, because the damn oath wouldnât let him achieve deep mutual satisfaction with Steven.
No, if the man was truly gone, it was better to just let him go.
